FAQs

What is coconut water?

Not to be confused with coconut milk, coconut water comes from the young, green coconut before the hairy shell and white flesh we associate with coconuts has developed.

ZICO is ‘made from concentrate’. Does that mean it is as good as ‘raw’ coconut water?

ZICO uses hand-picked coconuts and then most of the water is removed in a gentle heating process. This means transporting the coconuts is far easier and more eco friendly.  Pure water is then added back to the concentrate to restore it to its original nutritional profile. None of the ‘active’ ingredients are affected by this process.

In some ways the concentrate has advantages over ‘raw’ coconut water. Not only is it more efficient to transport, ZICO can blend coconuts from several regions of the world to ensure a consistent taste and composition and a lower calorie profile. By contrast raw coconut water from one region can vary in mineral composition, taste and sugar content.

Is ZICO pasteurised?

ZICO is pasteurised to ensure the product remains as pure as the original coconut water.  We use a new technique called ‘flash pasteurisation’.  This uses high temperatures for a brief amount of time to ensure the product is sterile without adversely affecting the taste and nutritional elements of the beverage.

What does isotonic mean?

Iso means ‘same’. It is a liquid that has a similar composition to the fluid we find in our own bodies, making it an ideal beverage for everyday hydration.

Why is ZICO lower in calories than some coconut waters?

Some coconuts are naturally higher in sugar content and therefore higher in calories. ZICO uses a blend of coconuts from Asia and Indonesia to ensure a lower calorie count.

ZICO is high in potassium. Why is potassium good for me?

Potassium is essential for normal muscle function. It helps prevent muscle cramps and aids recovery from exercise.

Why is ZICO fat free? I thought coconuts were high in fat?

ZICO is made from the water from young, green coconuts. The coconut, with its white flesh has not yet developed and the water does not contain any fat.

Why is ZICO in a plastic bottle and not a carton? Isn’t that less environmentally friendly?

Many of our consumers in research were demanding a bottle. The ZICO bottle is perfect for consumption on-the-go and can be resealed making it ideal for sport activity or simply sipping throughout the day. We looked long and hard at the most eco-friendly solution for ZICO packaging. It comes as a surprise to many but a plastic bottle like the ZICO one - made from HDPE - is in many ways more sustainable than carton packaging.  In the US - our first market – over 40% of HDPE bottles are recycled and only 20% of recycling centres are able to recycle carton material.
